Omega 3 fatty acids are important for your brain and eyes and also protect against cardiovascular disease. Many people think that omega 3 is only found in fatty fish. Now what if you eat vegetarian or vegan? No worries! In fact, fish do not naturally contain that omega 3, but instead get it from algae. You can also get omega 3 from various plant sources, but to play it completely safe (especially if you eat mostly plant-based foods), it's best to take a daily omega 3 supplement based on algae oil.
The most well-known omega 3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA the body cannot make itself, so you must obtain this fatty acid through diet. We therefore call it an essential fatty acid. The body itself makes EPA and DHA from ALA. But, this provides only a small amount of EPA and DHA. Fish cannot make EPA and DHA themselves, but get it from algae. Nowadays, EPA and DHA can also be obtained directly from algae.
This oil is ideal for (young) children who do not like to swallow capsules. The oil can be taken directly with a spoon (after eating), but is also very suitable over a salad or stirred into soy yogurt or a smoothie. The oil has a slightly nutty flavor, from the fresh flaxseed oil, cold-pressed in the Netherlands from Dutch organic flaxseed.
